Winston Hsu

United States patent agent Winston Hsu is the founder of NAIP Group. After studying electrical engineering at National Tsing Hua University, he went on to earn a master’s degree in computer science from the University of Iowa. After graduation, he worked in the United States for several years and was granted five United States patents and two Taiwan patents. He has been working with United States patents, including patent drafting, Office action response and telephone interviews, since 1998.

 

As well as his on-the-ground experience, Winston has a profound understanding of contemporary industries and technology and is often invited to speak by tech companies and to give classes at universities and technical colleges. It was his reputation among his peers in the patent sector that led to him not only being selected in September of 2010 as a member of the Intellectual Property Committee of the Chinese National Federation of Industries (ROC) but also being recommended as the 1st Board Director of the Taiwan Trademark Association in 2020.

Eric Zhang

United States Patent Agent

 

Eric Zhang studied for his Master’s and Ph.D. degrees in mechanical engineering at the University of California, Riverside. He passed the United States Patent Agent Examination in 2010, earning certification as a United States Patent Agent.

 

Before joining NAIP Group, Eric worked as a software engineer in Philips Semiconductors Shanghai Technology Center, and as a patent engineer in David & Raymond Patent Firm. These positions have given him wealth of patent and practical industry experiences.

 

His areas of expertise include semiconductors, electrical engineering, software, solar energy, mechanical structure and telecommunication. Eric is skilled in technical analysis, claim drafting as well as OA analysis and response.

 
 
 
 

Frank Wu

Taiwan Patent Attorney

 

Frank Wu has established himself as one of NAIP Group's most valuable employees. His extensive experience in both the United States and Taiwan patent industries has given him a rare insight into patent strategy, making him an ideal consultant for our clients. He currently leads one experienced team of engineers, with specializations ranging from mechanical and material engineering to optics and networking.

 

He studied his bachelor and master’s degrees in engineering at National Taiwan University, and received further training in patent prosecution and patent business practices at George Washington University. In 2008, he was one of only thirty-seven candidates who passed the first ever Taiwan patent attorney examination to be held, making him and his fellow successful candidates pioneers in shaping the future of the patent industry in Taiwan.

 
 
 
 

Adams Shieh

Taiwan Patent Attorney

 

Adams Shieh joined the NAIP team in 2007, from which time he has worked continuously to expand his professional skills. He earned his Taiwan patent attorney license in 2013 and specializes in electrical engineering, optoelectronics, digital and analog circuitry and image processing.

 

Adams graduated with a master’s from the Graduate Institute of Photonics and Optoelectronics of National Taiwan University, going on to work as a senior engineer in the R&D department of a renowned Taiwanese technology firm. This has given him a wealth of practical industry experience in display panels and semiconductor processing, allowing him an insight into the important aspects of inventions from a client perspective. Gino Tai

Taiwan Patent Agent

 

A former patent examiner, Gino Tai joined the NAIP Group in early 2008 and rapidly became vital to our Taiwan patent services program. Over four years serving at the Taiwan Intellectual Property Office (TIPO) has given him invaluable knowledge of the processes of patent examination and prosecution procedures in Taiwan. He specializes in patent drafting and prosecution across a range of technical fields, with a particular focus on telecommunications and networking technology.

 

He studied his Bachelor in electrical engineering at Yuan Ze University and went on to earn a master’s degree in the same field from Chang Gung University. He also trained at the Ministry of Economic Affairs' (MOEA) Research Center for Specialists, gaining accreditation as an assistant patent examiner in 2004 and patent examiner in 2007.

 
 
 
 

Jay Kao

Taiwan Patent Attorney

 

Jay Kao is an ambitious and driven patent attorney, earning certification in 2013, just two years after he joined the NAIP Group team in 2011. He stands out for his professional manner and skill as a patent engineer and provides quality service to our clients.

 

During his time studying chemical engineering, a field he specializes in, at Taiwan’s prestigious National Cheng Kung University, he also took modules on semiconductors, providing the basis for his expertise in semiconductor technology. On graduation, he won a coveted position as a senior engineer in the LED R&D department of a renowned high-tech manufacturer in Taiwan. This provided him with practical R&D experience in memory production processes and optics components, offering him an insight into the methodology of the invention process, experience that is extremely useful in formulating a comprehensive patent strategy.

 
 
 
 

Max Liu

Taiwan Patent Attorney

 

Max Liu has extensive experience in patent prosecution before joining the NAIP Group in 2023. He earned certification as a Taiwan patent attorney in 2017 and passed the China patent bar examination in 2019.

 

Mr. Liu studied for his bachelor's degree and master's degree in Biomedical Engineering and Environmental Sciences at National Tsing Hua University, and conducted biotechnology research at the National Health Research Institutes. After completing his studies, Mr. Liu has engaged in patent services since then. He has successfully assisted applicants in domestic and foreign patent prosecution, especially through the route under the Patent Cooperation Treaty (PCT), for emerging technologies across a range of industries including biomedical engineering, biotechnology, pharmaceutical industry, digital health / eHealth, chemistry, materials, and semiconductors.

 

In addition, Mr. Liu assisted a world-renowned pharmaceutical company in a patent linkage litigation and won the lawsuit which is final and binding. Moreover, he also provided Freedom to Operate (FTO) opinions, patent infringement analysis, patent map, and patent invalidation and served as an internal training lecturer of intellectual property for a diverse clientele including academic institutions, startups, and public listed companies. Therefore, Mr. Liu can assist clients in developing forward-thinking and full-spectrum strategies for acquisition, protection, and utilization of their patent portfolio.
